Self Defence for Women

South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world. The difference between our crime and that of other countries is that our crime tends to be more violent. Thieves no longer merely steal your car when you leave it parked, they hijack the vehicle - often with you in it! Hijackings, by their nature, are potentially fatal.

There is already almost no-one in South Africa who has been untouched, or unaffected by crime. Everyone you speak to these days have either been burgled, hijacked, raped, assaulted or otherwise violated themselves, or someone close to them has been.

Currently, South Africa has the highest rate of rape in the world with the staggering rate of a rape every 26 seconds. Each year, according to studies by UNISA based on police information, one million women and children are raped in South Africa. This means that at present, one in two South African women will be raped at least once in her lifetime.

To stop rape, we need to address the underlying psychological causes and we have to change fundamental attitudes that have prevailed for hundreds of years. This is going to take a very long time — and is highly unlikely in the foreseeable future. In the meantime, one thing we can do is try to prevent rape (and other crimes) from happening to us as individual women. All indications are that a woman who can defend herself and make informed choices in difficult situations is better placed to avoid rape than one who is not.

We believe that every woman in South Africa should attend a self-defence course. Ideally, our daughters should be taught at school, but alas, this does not happen. This means that it is up to us to educate ourselves. This course will not guarantee that you will not be the victim of a crime. But it will provide you with the knowledge and ability to enormously reduce your risk of becoming one of the one-in-two South African women who will be raped in her lifetime or the victim of some other type of crime.

Women have been struggling for years to have the right to take charge of our own lives. It is high time that we took responsibility for our personal safety ourselves. Give yourself the tools you need to make this possible.
